Settlement Housing Fund

About Us

Since 1969, Settlement Housing Fund has developed 57 projects with over 8,700 apartments –rentals, cooperatives, and two-family houses – that are home to more than 25,000 low- and middle-income residents, including a substantial number of formerly homeless people. Through affiliates, the organization currently owns 29 buildings containing 1,679 units, with its largest concentration of housing and programs in the Mt. Eden section of the Bronx, in Crown Heights, Brooklyn and in the Two Bridges neighborhood on the Lower East Side. These developments include St. John’s Place Family Center, a transitional shelter developed in 1990 that provides temporary housing, day care, infant care, and other services to 97 homeless families in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, and Semiperm on the Upper West Side, a longer term model of transitional housing with onsite staff support for 23 single-parent homeless families who are leaving the shelter system but are not yet ready for permanent housing. In addition, SHF operates facilities and programs including a new pre-kindergarten through grade 12 public school with a community center, swimming facility, dance studio, green learning roof terrace and more in the Bronx. In Brooklyn SHF runs a NYC Department of Education alternative school and US Department of Labor funded YouthBuild program, which provides education, construction job training, college access and employment placement to young people ages 16-24 who have been out of school and work. Settlement Housing Fund also consults on tenant selection.
