About Us

The mission of Cleveland Housing Network is to build strong families and vibrant neighborhoods through quality affordable housing and strengthened financial stability. We work toward our mission through Affordable Housing & Home Ownership Programs, Energy Conservation & Weatherization, Safety Nets & Supports, and Training & Education. CHN is the nation’s largest single-family affordable housing developer using Low Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTC). In 1987 we pioneered a link between the LIHTC and home ownership opportunities for low-income families. Called Lease Purchase, it has achieved an 85% success rate in moving families from renting to owning after the 15-year LIHTC compliance term. In all, CHN has developed 5,000+ housing units-- 80% as single-family, using for-sale and lease purchase models. More than 2,000 low- and moderate-income families have achieved home ownership through our innovative programs. Much of our work is done through collaborations to achieve scale and impact, including our Y16 CDC Initiative, an effort using CHN’s capacity to stabilize/preserve 700 CDC-sponsored LIHTC Lease Purchase homes in Cleveland (and to help families living there achieve home ownership); Opportunity Homes, an initiative that impacted 600+ vacant properties through rehab and resale, demolition and reuse; Housing First, an effort led by Enterprise Community Partners that has resulted in a 75% reduction in chronic homelessness through permanent supportive housing; Cuyahoga County Foreclosure Prevention Coalition, a partnership that has helped CHN achieve an 80% success rate in helping homeowners avoid foreclosure and remain in their homes; and Cuyahoga County EITC Coalition, an Enterprise-led partnership that has allowed CHN to return over $10 million to low-income families through free tax prep and the Earned Income Tax Credit. We have achieved Charity Navigator’s 4-star rating for 10 consecutive years—an accomplishment achieve by less than 1% of rated nonprofits.
